Rebekah Jones: Geographer, Journalist, and Environmental Enthusiast

Rebekah Jones's Bio:

There was a moment, when I was 16 and standing in the rubble of an 18th century church on the Biloxi Bay, that I realized I wanted more. More answers. More results. More time. My life has been a perpetual search for knowledge – an incessant need for the sort of wisdom only obtained through education and experience. Neither succeeds without the other. So throughout my undergraduate career at Syracuse University and into my graduate education at Louisiana State University, I’ve studied applied climatology, natural hazards and communications – the sheet music to the soundtrack of my life. My time at Syracuse transformed me into someone who barely resembled who I was when I arrived on the hill just five years prior: I am now a vegetarian, speak in spatial and temporal scales and am a GIS connoisseur.  Above all, I like to think discovering geography was like finding religion for me. It changed the core of who I am. As a geography and mass communications major at LSU, looking forward into my future, I will always be dedicated to truth and justice- the two pillars of my two majors. — I’m currently researching climate variability, sea level change and barrier islands. I also work on website development and publications for the Geography department at LSU and for the Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program. Aside from my work as a researcher, I write about climate change, social justice, gun violence, and science-fiction. Here’s some cool stuff I’ve done: –>Wrote an 800-word obituary for an 150-year-old pet alligator that was republished by USA Today. No joke. Read it here. –>Organized and hosted the fifth anniversary memorial of Hurricane Katrina at Syracuse University. Katrina defined much of who I am, and I try my best to honor the memories of those who were lost and those who continue to struggle. –> Played Beater for the Syracuse University Quidditch Team, and for the LSU Quidditch team. –>Published a 10,000 word, interactive analysis of preventable disease and death in America, illustrated using more than 30 maps and graphics, originally generated, using ArcMap and InDesign. I’m not bragging, but it was pretty epic. But there’s much more to me than that. I am a die-hard Saints fan, an unapologetic vegetarian, and an avid environmentalist. Check out some of my work on this website, and let me know what you think.   -Rebekah Jones
